Compounded Medications
Some medications may be prepared by state-licensed compounding pharmacies when medically appropriate.
- Important: Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, but may be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider when FDA-approved options are not clinically appropriate. These medications are dispensed by licensed 503A U.S. pharmacies in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.
- Compounded GLP‑1 Medications: In certain cases, a provider may prescribe a compounded version of a GLP-1 medication (e.g., semaglutide or tirzepatide) when medically necessary, such as in cases of intolerance, need for customized titration, or allergies to excipients in FDA-approved products. These compounded formulations are prepared for individual prescriptions and are not substitutes for FDA-approved drugs.
- Compounded GLP-1 prescriptions are reviewed case-by-case by licensed providers and require patient-specific documentation before being dispensed by the pharmacy.
