Navigating biology, biochemistry, microbiology and environmental science to better understand the interconnected forces shaping our skin.

Why We Need a Skin Compass
Why We Need a Skin Compass
We are accustomed to responding to changes in our skin from the outside.
A new serum. A different cream. A topical treatment designed to address what we can see.
It makes intuitive sense: the change appears on the surface, so we try to change the surface.
But the assumption behind it has also contributed to one of the beauty industry's most persistent misconceptions: that what we see on the surface can be understood by looking at the surface alone.
This way of thinking can leave much of what shapes our skin unexplored. Biology, biochemistry, microbiology and environmental science increasingly reveal a far more interconnected picture.
Skin is far more than the visible surface of our bodies. It is a living organ positioned at the intersection of different biological and environmental worlds — connected to processes unfolding within us, continuously exposed to the world around us, and inhabited by a complex ecosystem on its surface.
And these worlds do not operate independently.
Hormonal changes can influence the skin barrier and its microbial environment. Environmental exposures can interact with biological processes within the skin. Changes at the surface can alter the conditions in which microorganisms live. And how we eat, sleep, move, manage stress and care for our skin can reach across more than one of these worlds at the same time.
This is why we created the BeMediq Skin Compass.
The Compass brings insights from biology, biochemistry, microbiology and environmental science into one connected framework for understanding skin.
Instead of reducing skin change to a single explanation, the Compass offers a framework for exploring where we might look when skin begins to change — particularly through the transitions that become increasingly relevant for women from midlife onward.
It organizes this complexity into three interconnected worlds:
- The Universe Within Us — the biology beneath the surface.
- The Universe Around Us — the environment our skin encounters.
- The Universe On Our Skin — the living ecosystem at its surface.
Together, they offer a different way of thinking about skin: not simply as a surface to treat, but as a living system to understand.
BeMediq Skin Compass
Your skin is shaped by three interconnected worlds. Understanding each one helps us see skin not as an isolated surface, but as part of a larger, living system.
The Three Worlds
Where can we look to understand our skin?
Three worlds. Countless connections.
The Universe
Within Us
The biology beneath the surface — from hormones and metabolism to nutrients, immunity, circulation and cellular processes.
The Universe
Around Us
The external world our skin encounters — from light and air to climate, water and environmental exposures.
The Universe
On Our Skin
The microbial ecosystem living at the skin’s surface — and its relationship with the barrier, the environment and us.
How We Live
What can we influence through the way we live?

Across Life
How can what matters for our skin change as our biology changes through life?

How We Live Connects the Worlds
How We Live Connects the Worlds
The three worlds of the Skin Compass do not exist separately from the way we live.
Food, sleep, movement, mind and emotional wellbeing, behavioral exposures such as smoking and alcohol, and skincare can influence processes within the body, change the conditions our skin encounters, and shape the environment directly at its surface.
A skincare product, for example, does not interact with the surface alone. It encounters the skin barrier, its chemistry and microbial ecosystem. Nutrition can influence metabolic and biological processes within us. Where and how we live can change our exposure to light, air, climate and pollution.
This is why How We Live is not a fourth universe in the BeMediq Skin Compass.
It moves across all three.
Our everyday lives become part of the connections between the biology within us, the environment around us, and the living ecosystem on our skin.
03
Across Life
Across Life
Just as our lives do not stand still, neither does the state of our skin.
Across a woman’s life, the skin exists within changing biological conditions. From the reproductive years through perimenopause and into postmenopause, the hormonal context changes — and with it, its influence on skin biology, function and appearance.
These hormonal transitions can affect processes that matter visibly and functionally to the skin, including collagen production, hydration, barrier function and pigmentation. They may also interact with metabolic and immune processes and with the microbial communities living on the skin.
But Across Life is not another world of the Skin Compass.
It is another way of navigating the same three worlds — by adding the dimension of life stage.
That distinction matters because the same observation may raise different questions at different stages of life. During the reproductive years, cyclical hormonal changes may be part of the picture. During perimenopause, hormonal patterns become more variable. After menopause, a more sustained change in the hormonal environment creates yet another biological context.
The same principle applies to How We Live. Food, sleep, movement, mind and emotional wellbeing, behavioral exposures and skincare remain relevant across life, but what deserves greater attention may change as our biology changes.
The Worlds show us where to look. How We Live shows us what we can influence. Across Life helps us understand how the context can change along the way.
This adds another question to the Compass:
What may matter differently for my skin at this stage of my life?
Across Life does not assume that every woman follows the same path or experiences the same changes. It gives us another coordinate for exploration — one that recognizes that understanding our skin also means understanding the biological stage in which we are asking the question.
04
A Compass, Not a Diagnosis
A Compass, Not a Diagnosis
A compass shows us directions and helps us navigate — but it does not prescribe the destination or the path we choose to take.
The same principle applies to the BeMediq Skin Compass.
The Compass helps us explore the three interconnected worlds that shape our skin and consider where we might look more closely when something begins to change.
Dryness, pigmentation, sensitivity or changes in texture may invite us to explore different directions — from hormones, metabolism and nutrition to environmental exposures, the skin barrier or its microbial ecosystem. The Compass helps make these possible connections visible so they can be explored more thoughtfully.
But orientation is not diagnosis — and understanding a possible connection is not the same as treating it.
What we discover may point us toward different next steps. Sometimes that may mean reconsidering a skincare product or routine. Sometimes it may lead us to look more closely at nutrition, sleep, stress or other everyday habits. And sometimes the most meaningful direction may be a conversation with a dermatologist, gynecologist or another healthcare professional.
The Compass does not choose that direction for us. It helps us see where we might look — so we can decide where to go next.
It is a framework for understanding connections, exploring possible influences and making more informed choices about the path we take.

Where to Begin
Where to Begin
Where you begin depends on what you want to understand.
You may arrive at the Skin Compass because something about your skin has changed. You may be wondering about the role of hormones during perimenopause or menopause, questioning whether nutrition or metabolism could matter, exploring the effects of sun or pollution, or becoming curious about the microbiome living on your skin.
If your questions lead beneath the surface, explore The Universe Within Us — hormones, metabolism, nutrients, immune function, circulation and cellular processes.
If you want to understand what your skin encounters from the outside, explore The Universe Around Us — light, air, pollution, climate, water and cumulative environmental exposure.
If your questions concern the skin barrier, pH, microbial communities and the ecosystem at the surface, explore The Universe On Our Skin .
And sometimes, one question may lead through more than one world.
A question about dry skin, for example, might begin with skincare and the skin barrier, lead toward hormonal changes or nutrition, and raise questions about climate or other environmental conditions. The purpose is not to find every possible explanation, but to understand which connections may be meaningful enough to explore further.
Start with the question that matters to you. Follow the science where it leads. And choose the direction that makes sense for you.
